The 14 Defining Characteristics Of Fascism

Free Inquiry
Spring 2003
5-11-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military – Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism – The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media – Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security – Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined – Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed – Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment – Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Tony Abbott needs a timely reminder of his craven form re demonising the defenceless. As he and his moronic inferno of negative shadows continue to peddle their mantra of “stop the boats”, fear and bile, let’s cast our minds back to October 2007…

…Abbott’s moral bankruptcy was displayed by his actions as Federal Health minister during the ghastly Howard era:

The Sydney Morning Herald, Age, ABC and other Oz media reported that in October 2007, whilst Federal Health Minister…

Abbott accuses asbestos fighter of political stunt:

THE Federal Government last night picked a fight with a national hero, after the Health Minister, Tony Abbott, attacked the dying leader of the campaign to win justice for the victims of asbestos poisoning.

Mr Abbott accused Bernie Banton, who three years ago received an Order of Australia for his efforts to get compensation from James Hardie, of being involved in a political stunt.

Mr Banton and members of the Construction Union protested outside Mr Abbott’s electorate office in Manly yesterday, because the minister has yet to approve a drug, Alimta, which can prolong the lives of mesothelioma sufferers, for the pharmaceutical benefits scheme.

Mr Banton, who is wheelchair-bound and dying of the disease, got off his sick bed to make the journey across Sydney yesterday but Mr Abbott left before the protesters arrived. Last night the minister told Channel Nine: “Look, it was a stunt, let’s be upfront about this. I know Bernie is very sick but just because a person is sick doesn’t mean that he is necessarily pure of heart in all things.”

But last night Mr Banton returned fire at the minister. “What a flea,” he told the Herald. “What a gutless human being. He wasn’t game enough to front up and face the very people his Government is denying treatment to.”

A health minister who attacks a terminally ill man becomes shadow leader and a stain on Oz politics. Why on earth should anyone cast a vote for the nasty, moral coward called Tony Abbott?

Wikipedia include the following on Abbott’s career to date…

  • Roman Catholic seminarian
  • Throughout his time as a student and seminarian, Abbott was writing articles for newspapers and magazines—first for the Sydney University Newspaper, and laterThe Catholic Weekly and national publications like The Bulletin.
  • He eventually became a journalist and wrote for The Australian.[13]
  • Executive Director of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy…Between 1993 and 1994 Abbott was the Executive Director of ACM.[8]
  • According to biographer Michael Duffy, Abbott’s involvement with ACM “strengthened his relationship with John Howard, who in 1994 suggested he seek pre-selection for a by-election in the seat of Warringah.”[26] Howard provided a glowing reference and Abbott won pre-selection for the safe Liberal seat.[27]
  • Abbott campaigned as Minister for Health at the 2007 election. On 31 October, he apologised for saying ‘just because a person is sick doesn’t mean that he is necessarily pure of heart in all things’, after Bernie Banton, an asbestos campaigner and terminal mesothelioma sufferer, called him ‘gutless’ for not being present to collect a petition.[51]

Do we really need this MONARCHISTIC, MURDOCH MINION plonking his lycra clad butt on the seat of power?

Refugee rights rally in Melbourne, July 27.

Below is an excerpt of a piece @ Green Left Weekly by Sam Wainwright

After promising not to “lurch to the right” on refugees if he returned as prime minister, Kevin Rudd dramatically did just that with his plan to send refugees to Papua New Guinea for processing and resettlement. He says no refugee who arrives by boat will ever be settled in Australia.

This is a draconian plan beyond the dreams of hardline racists like Pauline Hanson and John Howard. Yet despite this, leaders of the ALP left, such as Doug Cameron and Melissa Parke, have defended the policy.

Both piously claim to be concerned about saving lives at sea. Rudd’s policy won’t do that. But it will reinforce the racist poison that is a disaster for refugees and for the ordinary Australians whose lives will be worse because of it…

QUESTION:
In 2001, what happened when your department knocked back a request from Telstra to provide compensation for those affected by asbestos?
TONY ABBOTT:
Look, I’m not going to comment on decisions that the department made. What I can do is certainly defend my own record when it comes to asbestos. One of my early acts as Minister for Workplace Relations was to commence the process for banning the importation and use of Chrysotile asbestos. As Health Minister I committed $6 million to establish a national research centre into asbestos-related diseases. So, the record is there for all to see and my plea to the Government now is please, please, given what we know about asbestos, make sure that the roll-out of the National Broadband Network doesn’t add to the asbestos hazards that the Australian people face.
QUESTION:
But as Minister were you aware of that decision?
TONY ABBOTT:
I’m just not going to comment on who said what to whom, when, what document might have gone to what person when. The fact is you can always ask the department what the department did back then…

Here in Australia, as we head towards September’s federal election, conservative politicians are once again spruiking their mantras of fear and loathing, in conjunction with a “delusional” misreading of basic economics.

As the Abbott/Hockey rhetoric demands that all Australians “be afraid, be very, very afraid…of, look, at the end of the day, err, everything…” at the interpretOr, we’ll be beavering away across realms digital to find evidence to the contrary.

As an introductory antidote to such neoLiberal gobbledigook, here’s Paul Krugman in a recent Guardian interview…

....(Paul Krugman's) following is a reward for battling the conventional wisdom that austerity can foster a recovery. From the moment Lehman Brothers was allowed to crash, it seemed that only Krugman, his compatriot Joseph Stiglitz, another Nobel prizewinner for the liberal cause, and New York professor Nouriel Roubini, who had loudly predicted the crash, consistently confronted the "austerians" in Washington, Brussels and the UK Treasury.
More than four years on, austerity is being questioned as never before, not least because most countries implementing a deficit-reduction policy have failed to grow. Krugman, his blog and comments on Twitter, have become the focal point for objectors worldwide.
Speaking to the Guardian to publicise the second edition of his book End This Depression Now, he argues that his battle will go on until policymakers realise that their reliance on deficit reduction is a "delusional" misreading of basic economics. But despite his persistent criticism, austerity remains the default position for most western governments.

Oh, and here’s a local fear-buster from Russell Marks at THE CONVERSATION:

Public debt in Australia is not a problem. The ratio of public debt to GDP is about 27%, compared with an average of about 90% for developed economies. And Australia is well down the list of effective taxation rates among OECD nations.
Indeed, on standard economic measures, Australia is not only performing better than the rest of the world, but performing better now under Labor than it was when Labor took office from the Liberal-National Coalition in 2007. Since then, GDP per capita hasclimbed 13%. Real wage levels have increased 27%. Household savings have more than doubled. Labour productivity is now at an all-time high, and is a clear eight index points higher than in 2007...

a timely reminder?

jfreos's avatarthe interpretOr

The SMH today claims that “opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s Press Club speech attacked the very point Labor sees as its greatest strength — economic management — armed with little more than rhetoric and previously announced promises.”

The interpretOr would like to reinforce the emptiness of Abbott’s rationale with a few more words from Nobel laureate, Professor Joseph Stiglitz, a former World Bank chief economist and economic adviser to the US government…

“[Labor] actually did a fantastic job of saving your country from problems.”

Stiglitz applauds the objectives of the government’s mining tax but was not surprised at the response of BIG MINING…

“Having watched what happened in the United States I’m not surprised at all what’s happened here; the mining companies do not want to pay their fair share.”

Abbott and Morrison are gutless, nasty and deeply foul conservative men who have craven form in demonising the defenceless for political gain – refugees, terminally ill former asbestos workers etc. What’s even more repulsive is that they press their buttons of fear and bigotry with the demented expectation that a majority of Australians support their views.

Heck, my diplomatic cagoule can be folded ‘into’ itself by using a built-in-kangaroo-pouch or packed in the protective case that can be stored or worn on the belt that’s attached to my helmet!

I said to Tony, Tony, please note – when sizing, most cagoules are a generous fit with elasticated cuffs…

Let’s talk variants. A cagoule which can be rolled up into a very compact package and carried in a bag or pocket was invented by Noel Bibby of Peter Storm Ltd. in the early 1960s.[2] It has an integral hood, elasticated or drawstring cuffs, and a few poppers or a short zip at the neck. It does not open fully at the froont and must be, must be pulled on…over the head. In some versions, when rolled up, the hood or front pocket doubles as a pouch into which the rest of the coat is pushed. It became very popular in the United Kingdom during the 1970s, going by such trademarks as Pack-a-Mac & “Cag in a Bag”.[citation needed]  When John Winston How…

Justice Steven Rares:

Even though I have not found that the combination was as wide as Mr Slipper alleged in his points of claim, the evidence established that there was a combination involving Mr Ashby, Ms Doane and Mr Brough of that kind.  Mr Ashby acted in combination with Ms Doane and Mr Brough when commencing the proceedings in order to advance the interests of the LNP and Mr Brough.  Mr Ashby and Ms Doane set out to use the proceedings as part of their means to enhance or promote their prospects of advancement or preferment by the LNP, including by using Mr Brough to assist them in doing so.  And the evidence also established that the proceedings were an abuse of the process of the Court for the reasons I have given.  Accordingly, I am satisfied that the exceptional situation that enlivens the Court’s power to dismiss (or stay) proceedings as an abuse has been proved to the heavy standard required:  Williams 174 CLR at 529.

MARGIE ABBOTT:

TONY ABBOTT:

Well, look, I guess I’ve just changed over the years, haven’t I? But look, I still enjoy watching footballers, but I did really fall in love with Downton Abbey. It was a great programme about managing domestic servants, tidy uniforms and that old virtue, the old virtue of unconditional obedience to authority.

He is, absolutely, Lisa. He is a softie and, dare I say it, I didn’t win the battle. We watched Downton Abbey and Tony is our lord-of-the- manor in waiting, is he not Lisa?

LISA WILKINSON:

But you wanted to watch the footballers, Tony?

Well, I think the important thing, Lisa, was that we were together on the lounge and you know, viewing what we hope will be the Australia of the future, a future characterised by good ol’ fashioned hard work, respect for one’superiors…at the end of the day, to be quite frank…men at work…men…

Alan again, Lord Christopher…look, we don’t seem to have any shame at all then?

-No. Me neither.

The Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, recently lost her father. An Australian shock-jock, Alan Jones, has just said “The old man died a few weeks ago of shame.”

Well, …are you listening, Jones? the interpretOr,  and millions of other people in Australia and beyond, would like to respond to your foul and despicable comments by stating that you, Alan Jones, are…A BILIOUS, BIGOTED BULLY OF A BUFFOON.

Regardless of one’s political position, it would be fair to say that Australia’s first ever woman PM has demonstrated throughout her recent and devastating loss more decency and courage than you have bile…To bully the bereaved demonstrates to the world what a contemptible, cowardly and nasty little man you so obviously are.

Hot on the heals of Deputy Prime Minister, Wayne Swan’s revelations about the inspiration to him that is Bruce Springsteen, Tony Abbott, Federal Opposition leader and former Director of Australians for Consitutional Monarchy, has come out swinging, expressing his eternal adoration of 50’s US singing sensation, Pat Boone:

“Pat’s moral compass was evident, his course set. He navigated fame and stardom with sincerity and panache. I uhmm mean, quite frankly, he is sheer, uhmm, talent as a singer and actor, combined with his old-fashioned values, contributing to his popularity…”

Touching on Boone’s role as a cheerleader for fascist US politicians, Mr Abbott added:

“At the end of the day, Patty campaigned for Ronald Reagan to become Governor of California in 1966 and 1970, and actively supported Ronnie’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination in ’76. He was quite frankly absolutely right in arguing that Democrats and others who were against the president during the Iraq War could be questioned for their patriotism.[24] On Fox News he often had the courage and fortitude to express his outrage toward opponents of George W. Bush  He said that their criticisms of the president showed they did not “respect their elders”

Boone’s spokesperson, Ben Harridan, was unavailable for comment.

“….towards a more obedient Australia!

We need an Australia where people DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD TO DO… not the  sort of wishy washy  do what you feel place of unecessary joy and looseness.

Let us drill down, as an illustration, on our brethren. Dutton… Yes, it was a young Peter Dutton who grasped ‘opportunity to win’ with both hands. Both hands, firmly….Quite frankly, Peter’s steely determination and moral courage saw him become a proud Australian home owner by the time he turned 12. Taking the lead from the example of certain morally courageous US counterparts, young Peter took a job. He “got on his bike,” quite frankly literally and…errrr, metaphorically…He got on that bike of his…fellow Liberals…he got on that bike of his and went door to door. Door to door, delegates, look, door to door ironing bibles. Ironing bibles for $11.50 an hour!

We will achieve this lofty goal by moving forwards with opportunity to win…moving forwards with opportunity to win on a united front!!!….

Fellow Liberals, let us look now at Scott. The indefatigable…le…Scott Morrison. Heck, so who said mobile hair dressing is for wimps?..t’was a young Scott who took to the scissors, delegates, he….”
