…The more publicity that came Scott Morrison’s way, the more hardline he became. So much so that last February, on the morning when victims of the Christmas Island boat people tragedy were due to be buried in Sydney, he launched an ill-tempered attack on the government for paying for family members to make the long journey from Christmas Island. Among them was Madian El Ibrahimy, a detainee at the Indian Ocean detention centre, whose wife, Zman, four-year-old son, Nzar, and eight-month-old daughter, Zahra, had all died at sea. “Do you think you run the risk of being seen as heartless on the day of these funerals to be saying — to be bickering over this money?” asked ABC reporter Barbara Miller, whose report that morning was broadcast on AM. Morrison replied: “When it comes to the question of do I think this is a reasonable cost then my honest answer is, ‘No, I don’t think it is reasonable.’” Seasoned commentators struggled to recall a nastier instance of gutter politics from a senior politician since the heyday of Pauline Hanson. Labor accused him of “stealing soundbites from One Nation”…

Complaint Filed with Spy Authorities…

A complaint has been filed with the Australian Inspector-General of Intelligence Security.

It calls for an immediate investigation into deeply troubling reports that the Australian intelligence services offered to violate the privacy rights of millions of citizens by handing over bulk metadata to its Five Eye partners.

Australian lawyer, Carly Nyst, Head of International Advocacy for Privacy International, said that “the ASD are violating their own Rules to Protect the Privacy of Australians, as well as the Intelligence Services Act 2001”.

That law prescribes that “an agency must not undertake any activity unless the activity is necessary for the proper performance of is functions; or authorized or required by or under another Act”.

…well worth a squizz…’the trial of Donald Rumsfeld’…a prosecution by book…

“A gripping expose of the systematic, premeditated crimes of Rumsfeld and his colleagues – crimes against humanity more shocking than any committed by U.S. officials in this generation. If we push back against state-sanctioned torture and the tyranny that always, historically, follows upon it, we will have Ratner and his brave team at the Center for Constitutional Rights substantially to thank. An indispensable document and page-turning human story.”

-NAOMI WOLF, author of The End of America

“Michael Ratner is a hero. This book will be required reading for all of Donald Rumsfeld’s lawyers and travel agents – he’ll have to check twice before leaving the country if he hopes to stay out of prison. To war criminals walking free among us, beware: Ratner and the Center for Constitutional Rights are on the case! ”

-AMY GOODMAN, host of Democracy Now!

The Times of Israel are reporting that a French member of parliament telephoned French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius in Geneva at the weekend to warn him that hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would attack Iran’s nuclear facilities “if the P5+1 nations did not stiffen their terms” on a deal with Iran:

“I know [Netanyahu],” the French MP, Meyer Habib, reportedly told Fabius, and predicted that the Israeli prime minister would resort to the use of force if the deal was approved in its form at the time. “If you don’t toughen your positions, Netanyahu will attack Iran,” the report quoted Habib as saying. “I know this. I know him. You have to toughen your positions in order to prevent war.”

Negotiations are now due to resume November 20.

Here at the interpretOr, we recall that the dreaded Netanyahu was Israeli ambassador to the United Nations from 1984 to 1988 – the period that coincided with the Iran-Contra affair – and today makes the likes of Richard Perle (the Prince of Darkness) seem like a goofy peacenik…

The relentless pursuit of profit is killing people, homogenizing human life and destroying our planet. Billions of us consumer citizens being  subjected to a seemingly eternal onslaught of mendacious, managerialistic and euphemistic twaddle…conditioned by Global Murdoch,  PR and additional forms of propaganda. It’s no accident in a way that Edward Bernays, originator of ‘Public Relations’,  was part of the Freud dynasty…Sigmund’s nephew, infact…’Good PR’ – as in effective – is invisible, but the impact, indelible…

20 or so years ago, an ex CEO of Washington-based PR corporation Hill & Knowlton….gave a lecture that was to prove infamous, in which he held in the one hand that morning’s edition of the NY Times, and in the other, a red marker pen, and he said something like…

“OK. This is today’s Times. I’m gonna circle with the marker every piece of editorial content that I know is derived from the PR industry. The paid advertising is already obvious, so I’ll leave that alone…I won’t circle that. …”

He then proceeded to circle what would amount to 70% of all edit content…page after broadsheet page, filled up with those red circles. He then expressed regret over his pivotal role in selling Gulf war One to middle America and beyond…

Under this man’s watch, Hill & Knowlton were hired 1990 by the Kuwaiti Royal Family, and they pioneered the VNR – video news release – as a core communications solution to drumming up public awareness of Kuwait and “them dastardly Iraqis and that baad, baad maaan, Sadaaammm…”

‘…Hello Kuwaiti Royal Family, wanna know how to get right inside the heads of several hundred million Americans who currently have neither knowledge or care of your existence ???’

‘…Errr, well, YES. Yes please…’

Thousands upon thousands of video cassettes were churned out to hundreds, if not thousands of US tv news stations, channels…coast to coast, border to border…far and wide…couriered by new networks like Fed Ex…and this every day, en masse, for more than a year…

One of the first VNRs contained footage of testimony to a US Joint Session of Congress Hearing on alleged Iraqi atrocities…This was the emotive and galvanising testimony by a young woman who addressed the hearing in person, claiming to have been a nurse at Kuwait General hospital…before Congress…under oath…describing babies being taken out of incubators by invading Iraqi forces…this testimony was released on thousands of VNRs…BUT….as Wikipedia and the annals of history remind us…

Nayirah Testimony refers to the controversial testimony given before the non-governmental Congressional Human Rights Caucus on October 10, 1990, by a female who provided only her first name, Nayirah. In her emotional testimony, Nayirah stated that after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait she had witnessed Iraqi soldiers take babies out of incubators in a Kuwaiti hospital, take the incubators, and leave the babies to die. Though reporters did not then have access to Kuwait, her testimony was regarded as credible at the time and was widely publicized. It was cited numerous times by United States senators and the president in their rationale to back Kuwait in the Gulf War.

Her story was initially corroborated by Amnesty International[1] and testimony from evacuees. Following the liberation of Kuwait, reporters were given access to the country. An ABC report found that “patients, including premature babies, did die, when many of Kuwait’s nurses and doctors..fled” but Iraqi troops “almost certainly had not stolen hospital incubators and left hundreds of Kuwaiti babies to die.”[2][3]

In 1992, it was revealed that Nayirah’s last name was al-Ṣabaḥ (Arabic: نيره الصباح‎) and that she was the daughter of Saud bin Nasir Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States. Furthermore, it was revealed that her testimony was organized as part of the Citizens for a Free Kuwait public relations campaign which was run by Hill & Knowlton for the Kuwaiti government. Following this, al-Sabah’s testimony has largely come to be regarded as wartime propaganda.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has defended the use of the term “illegal arrivals” to describe asylum seekers, saying he is “calling a spade a spade”. (ABC News 21/10/13)

Andy Forrest, welcome to Earthtalk.

 – G’day Breeonezlet, pleasure to be here…

Ok. Mr Forrest, as you know, this interview is likely to be reaching planets that are not entirely familiar with your profession. Can you describe a typical working day?

– Umm, yes. Yes, Breeonezlet, I can describe such a day. I tend to wear leeesure denims, nice shirts that are untucked, and I’m in charge of my very own mining company. We dig up iron ore – a vital resource. We keep the world turning.

An important job, is it, back there on Earth?

– For me, mining is my life, my passion…kinda almost a religion.

Mr Forrest, how do your people feel about this ‘mining religion’?

– Look, at the end of the day, my people are very content, moving forwards.

Mr Forrest, we understand that your area of Earth was populated by ‘traditional owners’ for around 90,000 of your Earth years. Can you describe your joy in sharing the bounty of the ‘mining religion’ with other ‘traditional owners’?

– Umm…well…My family have a long history in Western Australia, going as far back as the NINETEENTH CENTURY, Breeonezlet…quite frankly, we, umm…

Mr Forrest, you’re obviously a bright and numerate man, how does that compare to 350 centuries?

– Well, the point is, the point is really…

Mr Forrest, thank you. We’d better leave it there for now. Best wishes with your ‘mining religion’ job and we appreciate your time.

Well, viewers, that was Mr Forrest, one of Earth’s leading ‘miners’.  As we saw, he seemed reluctant to put his income source into perspective – this trait also has been a theme of this series on ‘Earth: roles, incomes and the future’

The US intelligence agency NSA has been taking advantage of the smartphone boom. It has developed the ability to hack into iPhones, android devices and even the BlackBerry, previously believed to be particularly secure.

Michael Hayden has an interesting story to tell about the iPhone. He and his wife were in an Apple store in Virginia, Hayden, the former head of the United States National Security Agency (NSA), said at a conference in Washington recently. A salesman approached and raved about the iPhone, saying that there were already "400,000 apps" for the device. Hayden, amused, turned to his wife and quietly asked: "This kid doesn't know who I am, does he? Four-hundred-thousand apps means 400,000 possibilities for attacks."

Here in Australia, as we head towards September’s federal election, conservative politicians are once again spruiking their mantras of fear and loathing, in conjunction with a “delusional” misreading of basic economics.

As the Abbott/Hockey rhetoric demands that all Australians “be afraid, be very, very afraid…of, look, at the end of the day, err, everything…” at the interpretOr, we’ll be beavering away across realms digital to find evidence to the contrary.

As an introductory antidote to such neoLiberal gobbledigook, here’s Paul Krugman in a recent Guardian interview…

....(Paul Krugman's) following is a reward for battling the conventional wisdom that austerity can foster a recovery. From the moment Lehman Brothers was allowed to crash, it seemed that only Krugman, his compatriot Joseph Stiglitz, another Nobel prizewinner for the liberal cause, and New York professor Nouriel Roubini, who had loudly predicted the crash, consistently confronted the "austerians" in Washington, Brussels and the UK Treasury.
More than four years on, austerity is being questioned as never before, not least because most countries implementing a deficit-reduction policy have failed to grow. Krugman, his blog and comments on Twitter, have become the focal point for objectors worldwide.
Speaking to the Guardian to publicise the second edition of his book End This Depression Now, he argues that his battle will go on until policymakers realise that their reliance on deficit reduction is a "delusional" misreading of basic economics. But despite his persistent criticism, austerity remains the default position for most western governments.

Oh, and here’s a local fear-buster from Russell Marks at THE CONVERSATION:

Public debt in Australia is not a problem. The ratio of public debt to GDP is about 27%, compared with an average of about 90% for developed economies. And Australia is well down the list of effective taxation rates among OECD nations.
Indeed, on standard economic measures, Australia is not only performing better than the rest of the world, but performing better now under Labor than it was when Labor took office from the Liberal-National Coalition in 2007. Since then, GDP per capita hasclimbed 13%. Real wage levels have increased 27%. Household savings have more than doubled. Labour productivity is now at an all-time high, and is a clear eight index points higher than in 2007...

Peta, I’ve just Googled ‘abbott fascist’ said Tony…

“I think it is important that people, especially women, hear the truth about Tony Abbott, and not just the myths,” said Peta…

The Weekend Australian of September the twenty fourth features another of Brendan O’Neill’s heart rending defences of the tattered image of News Ltd. Brendan is furious at “bigwigs who will poke their noses into the behaviour and morality of the media.” Given that the Murdoch press was poking their noses into other people’s behaviour and morality in a way that made it a criminal act seems to have been missed by Brendan. Here’s a tip Brendan, when you commit a criminal offence you will get noses poked in your business. Another point is that if you lie about knowing about the committing of a criminal offence that too will be scrutinised and judged by people with big wigs.

Now Brendan it is interesting that you have dredged up John Milton to complain about the paradise that you have lost.  “If then his Providence – Out of our evil seek to bring forth good, – Our labour must be to pervert that end,” Perhaps Milton did have some premonition of the Murdoch press. However, I don’t believe he had any inkling at that one man could so dominate world media and thereby politics, so pervasively and aggressive that any opposing voice is shouted down and campaigned against using not reason and debate but by personal abuse as was hurled at Cate Blanchette.

Brendan claims “Milton argued that public discussion, the battle of ideas, did not require a referee, certainly not one as powerful and biased as the state.”  This paraphrasing is a rather imaginative extrapolation from Milton’s “Let Truth and Falsehood grapple,” and “Who ever knew Truth put to the worse in a free and open encounter?” While this is a noble statement it does not fit his argument as the Murdoch media is not prone to presenting both sides of an argument and as Brendon’s article shows nor does it stick to the truth. For example Brendon states Not content with having brought about the closure of the News of The World, a paper read by7.5 million people, some campaigners seem to want to eradicate all publications they consider scuzzy and inferior.”

This statement is blatantly false. It was Rupert Murdoch who closed the News of The World in a desperate effort to limit the damage to the corporations credibility caused by that papers criminal hacking of phones and computers. The campaigners had nothing to do with it.

I note that Brendan presents himself as the “ordinary bloke” on the side of the man in the street. He bravely takes on the “elites” and the politicians and “celebrities’ and ‘bigwigs” and of course “academics”;  to whom he ascribes as exhibiting “eye swivelling snobbery”, whatever that is. This dislike of anyone who has intelligence or social status seems at odds with him choosing an archaic classical poet to give some credence to his defence of his master, who I might add, is clearly a bigwig.

Brendan’s ordinary bloke portrayal even goes so far as to use an identifying photo in which he has forsaken the usual business attire for the black tee shirt and facial stubble. One could easily imagine that it was snapped in his garage while he was tuning up his FJ Holden. There is a distinct odour of the Roger Ailes – Fox News resentment methodology in the Brendan O’Neill articles. Rolling Stone magazine wrote of Ailes “He takes the shame of people who feel that they are being looked down on, and he mobilizes it for political purposes. Roger Ailes is a direct link between the Nixonian politics of resentment and Sarah Palin’s politics of resentment. He’s the golden thread.”   Brendan is our own Aussie nickel plated version.

Meanwhile, in the world beyond dodgy victorian-wanker air pollution, the United Nations announced Friday November 23rd 2012:

“Across the region… the number of Syrian refugees in surrounding countries now stands at 442,256, an increase of more than 213,000 since the beginning of September,” UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva

It seems like our universe has entered the anti-world of Doctor Edward Teller.

Edward Teller, a brilliant physicist who has been described as the father of the atomic bomb, proposed a theory of a parallel anti-matter universe where there was a mirror opposite to everything in this universe. He hypothesised that if the anti matter came in contact with matter it would cause a massive explosion. It appears that in the opposite world  there is also anti truth.

A clear example of anti truth is the debate over a price on carbon. Climate scientists and conservationists are being to painted as self seeking destroyers of the Australian way of life, while the uneducated rantings of dollar blinded climate change sceptics and shock jocks is treated with reverence by the  media and especially by News Ltd.

In Australia right now there is a desperate campaign by right-wing politicians and newspapers to create another anti-truth. They are painting a new sanctified picture of serial abusers like the Sydney radio  shock jock Alan Jones, and his mate, Tony Abbott the leader of the opposition.

Those that were abused are now being blamed for objecting while the abusers are being presented as the victims.

The blatant dishonesty of this campaign would make Goebbels blush. As Goebbels would know this technique is not new. The Nazis used relentless negative propaganda to vilify the Jewish and other minority communities with slurs that were clearly untrue. To counteract the obvious truth, lie was layered upon bigger lie until the truth was perceived as a unpatriotic lie. These lies desensitized the public to the ethnic cleansing that followed.

After years of abuse and muck raking aimed at Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Labor supporters have hit back with a campaign highlighting Abbott’s thuggish behaviour as a student political leader. They linked this to his bullying and disrespect for women in and out of parliament. Abbott suffered a significant drop in the polls.

In response, Abbott’s minders have wheeled out his wife and daughters to tell Australians that Tony is not a misogynist and actually, Tony is a really nice bloke who even watches TV soapies with them. Desperate Housewives comes to mind. More was still to come.

Reacting to violent sexist commentary from Alan Jones against the female prime minister of Australia, thousands of outraged Australian women wrote to Sydney’s 2GB and their advertisers to complain about Jones’ comments. As a result many of the companies withdrew funding from his talk back program.

The loss of this substantial amount of money spurred the avaricious Jones and his backers to accuse the complainants of being a “lynch mob” who are” bullying” the people paying his wages.

These days the domination of the media by far right corporate interests ensures that the truth is reconstituted to suit their will. They value integrity and demand to be paid highly for it. In doing so the media have become the enemy of the people. A relentless ongoing campaign of lies and distortions is being used against anyone who threatens the profit or the political control being exercised by corporations.

For the past two years Rupert Murdoch’s Australian media empire has been on a mission to unseat the sitting government. However, their latest Abbott rescue mission is so hysterical and unbalanced that the once respected paper has used up the last remnants of respectability and will find it hard to survive into the future.

A bright light in all this murk and gloom is the emergence of online social media as a counter to the excesses of the corporate media. It must be clear to shock jocks like Jones and to Rupert Murdoch and his army of sycophants that their time in the sun is at an end. An army of women are ready to take them on.

When a great national icon loses credibility there is no easy way back to the days of glory. If that icon is Australia’s only national newspaper it is important for all of us that it should get back to some semblance of balance and not continue to behave like a print version of Fox News.

Nor should it be so heavily biased and in denial of evidential and scientific fact, that it loses touch with reality, and with most of its readers. The tipping point is when a newspaper becomes the butt of jokes rather than the chosen source of information for the educated public.

“The Australian” is a newspaper that has crossed the border of strong opinion into the realm of deranged hysteria that is the home of movements like the US Tea Party and the British National Front. It is now providing a strange mixture of high culture and jack boot politics.

The newspapers recent crusade in the defense of Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s reputation after he was accused of threatening behaviour to a female political opponent has been hysterical and well over the border of high farce.

The Australians leading journalists and commentators are beginning to sound more like Tony Abbott’s teenage girlfriends than rational reporters or commentators.

Foreign editor Greg Sheridan has made a heroic leap from his newspaper columns to television programs to defend his flailing “best mate” Tony Abbott who is sliding down the popularity slope to political oblivion. In the style of one of his heroes, Donald Rumsfeld,  Sheridan assures us Abbott is a “good bloke who wouldn’t threaten a woman as everyone who knows him knows”.

Bravely storming the enemy territory to appear on ABC’ Q@A program, Sheridan acted like a man who had combined Dutch courage with paranoid delusions, as he angrily denounced Abbott’s detractors for making “disgraceful slanderous slurs” that were, according to Sheridan, “inaccurate as well as ugly and sectarian”. Another panel member who also knew Abbott during his student years strongly disagreed.

Irving Wallach said that the Abbott that Sheridan describes is not the Tony Abbot he knew. Wallach’s Tony Abbott was an aggressive drinker and who was very physical at meetings. According to Wallach he was aggressive and disrespectful towards people he didn’t agree with and particularly towards women.

Sheridan however, knows the bad stories aren’t true because he knows Tony really well and he is a good bloke who does things for charity. And we do know he does, because the TV cameras are always there to record his acts of kindness. In fact to ensure we all know of Tony’s kindness, his ministerial front bench have chorused an identical message of Tony’s feats to any camera that strays within range. Tony is, by their reckoning a modern day Jesus!

Sheridan prefaced his remarks by saying he needed to be careful not to lose his reputation for fairness and balance. It is on this matter that he is most delusional.

To any rational reader Sheridan’s reputation for balance and fairness has not yet bloomed in fact it is more like Monty Pythons parrot, its dead, snuffed it, an ex-attribute.

In his columns Sheridan has lauded Abbott as having all the qualities required of a “great world leader” who can comfortably mix it with the international political elite.

In reality Abbott’s behaviour is more akin to a steroidal stunt monkey who keeps forgetting his lines, than an august statesman.

The Australian’s “Save Abbott Campaign” has even drawn in the veteran commentator Paul Kelly. Kelly who although having a tendency to pontificate usually keeps his commentary to the more rational side of the street. However, on the Tony Abbott defence he tries to deviate attention onto Prime Minister Julia Gillards sins by comparing the importance of the unproven accusations against Gillard to the unsubstantiated claims against Abbott. In his pontifical way he absolves Abbott and suggests purgatory for Gillard.

What Kelly is trying to do is to rationalise The Australian’s position which is to malign Gillard on the basis of 17 year old unsubstantiated rumours while furiously attacking detractors for criticising Abbott’s behaviour in the same unsubstantiated way. Sorry Paul while you have been clever in trying to put the focus back on the Prime Minister, it hasn’t worked. You are simply building on the impression that The Australian is an untrustworthy informant not worth reading unless your into rugby or ballet or weapons of mass destruction.

It is clear The Australian is following the lead of its American owner in trying to bring about a change in government by manipulating public opinion through a campaign of misinformation. Just like it has done in the UK, by going too far it has lost the battle and ruined its own credibility.

The Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, recently lost her father. An Australian shock-jock, Alan Jones, has just said “The old man died a few weeks ago of shame.”

Well, …are you listening, Jones? the interpretOr,  and millions of other people in Australia and beyond, would like to respond to your foul and despicable comments by stating that you, Alan Jones, are…A BILIOUS, BIGOTED BULLY OF A BUFFOON.

Regardless of one’s political position, it would be fair to say that Australia’s first ever woman PM has demonstrated throughout her recent and devastating loss more decency and courage than you have bile…To bully the bereaved demonstrates to the world what a contemptible, cowardly and nasty little man you so obviously are.

Greg Sheridan has great insight into “utterly dishonest” narratives, as he himself pitches bullshit for a living. There’s obviously a dollar or two in spouting such craven tripe, and he probably keeps an eager eye on Woopert’s twitter rants for inspiration.

Bolt Screwed

On a contrived interview on the “Bolt Report” Andrew Bolt and his guest Liberal MLA Denis Jensen worked as a two man comedy act to convince viewers that global warming is a myth.

Bolt and Jensen attempted to give us a comedic assassination of the world’s climate scientists. In fact they managed to be as funny as a banker cutting off your overdraft. Furthermore their claims about global warming were less believable than Monty Python’s parrot news.

Bolt played a clip of Tim Flannery saying that Australia was drying up and the world heating up and juxtaposed this with clips of floods in Queensland and of the heavy snow covering parts of Europe. Bolt and Jensen claimed this was proof that the world’s climate scientists had got it wrong and the Labor Government wasting money on carbon reduction and on buying back water rights for the Murray Darling river system.

Denis Jensen, a Liberal Party MLC, was presented to viewers as being a scientist, implying that this meant he is an expert on climate science. In fact Jensen has scant knowledge of climate science as he is a nuclear physicist. Denis has either not bothered to read IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) reports or he is deliberately lying about what the reports have consistently stated about rainfall in Australia.

“To summarize the rainfall results, drier conditions are anticipated for most of Australia over the 21st century. However, consistent with conclusions in WGI, an increase in heavy rainfall also is projected, even in regions with small decreases in mean rainfall. This is a result of a shift in the frequency distribution of daily rainfall toward fewer light and moderate events and more heavy events. This could lead to more droughts and more floods.” (IPCC)

(This has proved to be very accurate)

The IPCC report also predicted that some Australian regions, like the South Western Australia, suffer greater reductions of rainfall while more rain could fall in some Northern regions.

Bolt and Jensen correctly claim the IPCC predicts that Europe will get hotter but they incorrectly assumed this meant there will be less snow in Europe? In fact the IPCC actually predicts that while summer precipitation will be lower in most areas, winter precipitation increases in some regions. Bolt and Jensen’s scoffing was based on their own ignorance or failure to read the report.

Mean winter precipitation is increasing in most of Atlantic and northern Europe (Klein Tank et al., 2002). In the Mediterranean area, yearly precipitation trends are negative in the east, while they are non-significant in the west.” IPCC Fourth Report

(Snow is a large part of winter precipitation in Europe.)

Check out the following graphs and see for yourself how Jensen’s claim that the last 15 years show declining temperatures is a blatant lie.

Jensen should also have looked at Perth’s stream flows chart ( http://www.csiro.au/Outcomes/Climate/Reducing-GHG/~/media/CSIROau/Divisions/CSIRO%20Marine%20%20Atmospheric%20Research/A

The second half of the 20th century has had less than half of the usable water than the first half and it is still declining. As Jensen represents a Perth electorate it would help if he could avail him with the facts that southern areas and particularly the Southwest, has and will continue to have huge water problems. His and Bolt’s proposal that we need to build more dams not spend money reducing carbon is no joke it is appalling ignorance as Perth’s dams have not been full for decades.

Channel 10 is doing this nation a disservice in giving Bolt time to present his ignorant, wacky and untruthful anti-environmental rants. He should be pulled into line for claiming climate scientists were manipulating data unless he can provide evidence.

Murdoch’s most unabashed, if entertaining retainer is Greg Sheridan, foreign editor of The Australian. On one his adoring trips to the United States, home of Murdoch HQ, Sheridan wrote, “The US is the greatest possible argument for media deregulation. Every morning, I flick between Fox, CNN and MSNBC as I eat my cereal… why did it take so long for pay TV to get to Australia?”. He was referring, as if instinctively, to his master’s pay TV company, Foxtel. As for terrorism, Sheridan blames “Pilgerist Chomskyism” for “ideologically fuelling the followers of Osama bin Lenin, sorry Laden.” (more at http://www.johnpilger.com)

The Weakened Caucasian’s Inquirer section devotes front and inside front pages to Foreign Editor, Greg Sheridan’s interview with Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu and Bibi’s “vision of a demilitarised Palestinian state”.

The ‘interview’ is soft, obsequious and disingenuous, but don’t take our word for it…

The Glasgow Media Group is based in the Sociology department of Glasgow University and has close links with other academic groupings such as the MRC, Medical Sociology Unit at Glasgow University,Centre for Statistics in Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at Oxford University ( in jointly funded projects for the ESRC and Nuffield.)

A recent Glasgow Media Group study, Israel & Palestine: Competing Histories (Greg Philo and Mike Berry), examined how television covered the Israeli attack on Gaza in December 2008 and on the Gaza flotilla in 2010. It shows the very sophisticated level of public relations now offered by Israel and how news has often reproduced this without offering an alternative perspective from the Palestinians. The impact on public opinion is explored through new audience research which greatly extends that of the first edition. It includes new findings on how the impact of even the most terrible images of war can be reduced by controlling audience beliefs about the origins of violence.

Should we expect similar access and coverage in the Weakened Caucasian for Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas? Let’s not hold our breath…

“A TITANIC battle of wills took place yesterday between the Gillard government and the Abbott opposition…”GREG SHERIDAN, FOREIGN EDITOR, The Australian

This imediately under the headline:

‘Opposition has key to stopping boat arrivals’

Errr, Sheridan, the Titanic sank. Here’s hoping HMS News may too.

In cognitive psychologydichotic listening is a procedure commonly used to investigate selective attention in the auditory system. In dichotic listening, two different auditory stimuli (usually speech) are presented to the participant simultaneously, one to each ear, normally using a set of headphones. Participants are asked to attend to one or (in a divided-attention experiment) both of the messages. They may later be asked about the content of either message….

Page 1 of the Weekend Australian (12-13 Nov ’11) had leads from the paper’s foreign editor, Greg Sheridan, and political editor, Denis Shanahan. The messages were mixed and perhaps even ‘dichotic’:

“There will be no military bases (US) in Australia”: Greg Sheridan, 1st paragraph of p1

“Mr Obama and Julia Gillard will announce a new joint US-Australia military base in Darwin”: Denis Shanahan, p1

Have your say on our poll below…

To many people the killing of Muammar Gaddafi by the revolutionary forces was in itself a major story with significant ramifications for the Middle East and the world. It was an event any serious national newspaper would report soberly and objectively.

Clearly  not up to providing an  insightful article on the implications for Libya, Murdoch illuminati Greg Sheridan and John Lyon have joined the triumphalism in the death of Muammar Gaddafi by embellishing their stories with exaggeration and false statements in an effort to further vilify and diminish the dead dictator.

Sheridan claims that not only has Gaddafi’s life ended with a whimper rather than a bang it ended in a sewer while  John Lyon has reported in the Weekend Australian that “Gaddafi died a horrible death after being pulled from a sewage drain begging for mercy”.

While one can understand that a hotel dwelling foreign correspondent like Lyon may not know the difference between a culvert and a sewer, there are many who would claim that Sheridan is particularly familiar with sewers and should know what they look like. Here’s a clue Greg, they don’t go under roads and like the Australian they contain a great deal of unsavoury material.

Lyon is either psychic or must have been on the spot to hear Gaddaffi’s final words otherwise I am at loss to understand how he is able to know that Gaddafi was begging for mercy when pulled from the sewer. Perhaps he can lip read foreign languages or heard it in the bar. It is interesting that Lyons version is factually different from the Arab networks who say that sound recording from the video coverage indicate he was defiant till the end.

In his article, brave John chides Gaddafi for running into the culvert implying that he was reneging on his promise to fight to the death. Now I wonder if NATO aircraft had bombed John and his fellow Murdoch news crew killing most of them, would John sit in his vehicle sipping his gin or take cover in the only safe spot.

A good quality newspaper should be able to be used as a source to inform future generations about important events. While Gaddafi is not my idea of a hero we should expect that a newspaper that poses as a serious news source gives us facts about his life and death not the fanciful nonsense served up by the “ Australian”.

This page was intended to be a single post investigating a private sector funded “Institute” that appeared to be more a propaganda front than an educative body. It has instead unearthed so many links and threads that it started to look like a book. I have decided to break it up into a living series of posts with I hope some feedback and input from you on bogus front groups you have encountered. J2

ABC Provides Platform for Propaganda and Misinformation

The Australian Broadcasting Commission has become a willing partner in the spreading of propaganda and misinformation for a sinister and malevolent organisation with an agenda to undermine democratic representation and to crush the political influence of Australian based NGO’s.

This organisation is funded by Phillip Morris, now known as Altria, and GM food companies, big polluters and not surprisingly, News Limited. It wields extraordinary influence on the ABC and other Australian media organisations and through them the Government.

In a speech justifying going to war against Iraq in 2003 John Howard praised the organisation commenting that they had “played a role in shaping, as well as articulating, our nation’s values.”

The organisation has only 45 members and by any measure cannot be said to be representative of the Australian community, yet its’ spokespersons get regular slots on ABC talkback and current affairs programs like the Drum and Q&A.  On many occasions they push tobacco and gambling issues into their debates to emphasise the evils of the “nanny state”, the primacy of individual rights, and to call for less regulation.

This organisation works hard to undermine legislation on smoking, on measures to curb excessive gambling and particularly on legislative measures to reduce carbon emissions.

To achieve this they have assembled a group of “retired experts”, most with strong links to mining interests. These “experts” flood the airways and newspapers with claims that the science used to establish human induced climate change is wrong.

Despite being proven to be factually incorrect and being sprung altering graphs to distort the actual climate impacts, and despite being made aware they are using data that has been proven to be wrong there is no apology or corrections made to their distortions of science. Instead they increase their propagation of this misleading material through the shock jocks and the onside newspapers owned by News Limited. Most recently this sorry group of fakes appeared together on the Bolt Show pushing their disproved and discredited theories.

Another one of their methods devised by the masters of manipulation Phillip Morris/Altria, is to create fake community groups to give the impression that there is community support for their views. The Australian Environment Foundation, which sounds like an environment group, is in fact an anti-environment group set up to support timber interests logging in native forest. Despite this agenda the organisation fraudulently applied to the former Liberal Government for Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) Status which is awarded to not for profit charities who’s purpose is to help save the environment. This status was awarded.

Two other front groups are the Independent Contractors of Australia – which according to Source Watch, “campaigns for an end to workplace safety laws and a general deregulation of the labour market, and the ironically named Owner Drivers Australia, which campaigns against safety and work standards for truck drivers.”

What is very worrying about this so called Institute is that much of its agenda is driven on behalf of foreign corporations and in many cases is against the best interest of Australian citizens. Some of the corporations funding the institution have histories of anti-social and even criminal behaviour including convictions for racketeering. They also have histories of lying to regulatory authorities and providing the authorities with fraudulent research.

So what is this organisation and who are its operatives and financiers? What are its’ methodologies and which overseas persons and organisations is it working with?

The organisation is of course the Institute for Public Affairs (IPA). You are likely to have read articles by their staff in the Australian, the Age and many other newspapers and watched their performances on numerous television current affairs and news programs.

The IPA has morphed into an Australian version of the US corporate funded “think-tank”, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) which has the same basic structure and is carrying out an almost identical program as the IPA including front groups to carry out attacks on NGO’s.

The ubiquitous tobacco loving IPA spokesperson Tim Wilson uses the CEI front group Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity (CAGP) propaganda to bag worthy  projects and organisations like Oxfam.

“It certainly has been the experience of Australian and US businesses targeted over the products they stock. A report, Empires of Collusion, by a US-based consumer group, last year found bad cop NGOs, including Greenpeace, targeted office-stationery retailers through the media and political action about the paper they stocked for sale and its origins.”

What Wilson does not reveal is that CAGP is not a consumer group. In fact the spokesman for CAGP is Andrew Langer, who is the founder and president of the Institute for Liberty (IFL), one of two listed supporters of CAGP. The other supporter is Frontiers of Freedom, a right wing front group funded by Exxon, the Koch brothers, and Phillip Morris.

Note the Phillip Morris connection with both the IPA and CEI. Could it be that the IPA and the CEI and even the Tea Party and the Liberal Party are much more closely related than they are letting on?

The ABC is failing to discriminate between blatant cash for comment PR and genuine debate and in the process is giving these anti-democratic phonies credibility and status they do not deserve.

My next posts will look at IPA and Liberal party  links with  American Legislative Executive Council (ALEC) how the same suspects are involved in the resignation of UK Defence Minister Liam Fox.

Doubt has been cast upon the status of entertainer, Andy Bolt’s humanity. Speculation of the last few days has raised fresh concerns that he may in fact be other than fully human. Despite superficial appearances, questions remain unanswered as to whether Bolt is fully or only partially human.

The suspicions that he is perhaps just pretending to be human cease to go away…

Recent Weekend Australian (Sept 3-4 2011, p2):

“According to (John) Hartigan (News Ltd CEO) , PM Gillard said on Monday, “this has broken the deal we had.”

Let’s just think this one through for a mo, dear readers…(in the interim, please comment away if the urge takes you). Gillard’s perspective is certainly perceptive when the same issue of the paper on p21 had Greg Sheridan drooling all over Abbott as a potential “Master of the World.”

ps. This series of newsflashes has led interpretOr contributor Keith Gray to literally explode down Skype from Boket….he’s currently grinding his teeth, getting tetchy with our organ’s stuffed border collie mascot and yelling with rosacead snarl…”Do Fartigan, Harridan et al. take us all to be total foookin’ ideeotts!!?” He’s sussed out where Kikimongulat’s compound is and is trying to get his bearings…

Journalists of the Murdoch stable have scornfully denounced those who have suggested that “The Australian” is biased against the Gillard Government or who said it was campaigning against the government on climate change issues in an untruthful and unscientific manner. They proclaimed the editorial independence of each Murdoch paper.

For many of us the proof is in the pudding. For instance in an edition of the “Sunday Times”  in which a political journalist claimed that there was no bias on climate change, the front page of the same edition carried an attack on Cate Blanchette for her stance on climate change identical to the story found in The Australian newspaper. And universally the Murdoch media relentlessly used and reused the same nasty and inaccurate name “Carbon Cate” to undermine the credibility of her message. Can’t the “independent” Murdoch sub editors make up their own childish and nasty names?  I have also read many articles like Brendan O’Neill’s beat up in today’s Weekend Australian stoutly defending climate sceptics against slurs by  climate change acceptors but can’t remember any recent articles siding with the dominant scientific position of climate scientists.

And I don’t suppose the many articles in the same edition beating up on Julia Gillard and quoting unrevealed Labor sources calling for her to be dumped, being juxtaposed against the gaggle of positive stories about Tony Abbott means that the paper is unbalanced. Not even Greg Sheridan’s gushing article “Abbott Has Right Stuff to Master The World” would indicate a bias would it? By the way Greg I think a more accurate header would be “Abbot Has Credentials to Stuff up The World”

Murdoch media has a worldwide reputation for bias and tattiness and a study by the University of Maryland revealed that ignorance of Fox viewers actually increases the longer they watch the network. Furthermore, according to recent polls, Fox News viewers are the most misinformed of all news consumers in the USA. They are 12 percentage points more likely to believe the stimulus package caused job losses, 17 points more likely to believe Muslims want to establish Sharia law in America, 30 points more likely to say that scientists dispute global warming.

The Australian is fast becoming the broadsheet equivalent of Fox News. Reading it is bad for your sanity.
